eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Math modeling is currently at the focus of educational methodologists’ attention. However, little is known about the extent to which principles of the math modeling lead to methodological fallacies in educational research. The main purpose of this paper is to explore the nature and principles of math modeling and to examine its application in educational research according to transcendental realism theory. The conclusion of the article suggests some methodological fallacies in educational research. Finally, the implications of the fallacies in educational research are considered. Link til kilde

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract James Madison University faculty team-teach an interdisciplinary mathematical modeling course for mathematics and biology students. We have used two different project-based approaches to emphasize the mathematical concepts taught in class, while also exposing students to new areas of mathematics not formally covered in class. The first method allows students to select projects based on their individual interests, which provided the class with an exposure to the breadth of applications of mathematical modeling to biology. The second method allows students to select projects that are focused around one common biological theme, which encouraged a remarkable cohesion among the whole class. These strategies could be extended to various applications-based mathematics courses. We present our observations and make recommendations for project-based… Continue Reading →

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT “Data science” is a useful catchword for methods and concepts original to the field of statistics, but typically being applied to large, multivariate, observational records. Such datasets call for techniques not often part of an introduction to statistics: modeling, consideration of covariates, sophisticated visualization, and causal reasoning. This article re-imagines introductory statistics as an introduction to data science and proposes a sequence of 10 blocks that together compose a suitable course for extracting information from contemporary data. Recent extensions to the mosaic packages for R together with tools from the “tidyverse” provide a concise and readable notation for wrangling, visualization, model-building, and model interpretation: the fundamental computational tasks of data science. Abstract Following a modeling-first approach to differential equations, inquiry-based learning activities on modeling and controlling the growth of locally relevant species, such as lionfish or sea turtles, are developed by the authors. Emerging exemplary practices are presented, building towards a balanced teaching of differential equations involving multiple mathematical perspectives, representations, and intra-disciplinary and interdisciplinary mathematical connections. This innovative approach is an effort towards realizing the MAA’s Common Vision for Undergraduate Mathematical Sciences programs in 2025. Discrete and continuous approaches… Continue Reading →

Uncheck the box to turn MathJax off. This feature requires Javascript. Click on a formula to zoom. Abstract Despite widespread calls for the incorporation of mathematical modeling into the undergraduate biology curriculum, there is lack of a common understanding around the definition of modeling, which inhibits progress. In this paper, we extend the “Rule-of-Four,” initially used in calculus reform efforts, to a “Rule-of-Five” framework for models and modeling that is inclusive of varying disciplinary definitions of each. This unifying framework allows us to both build on strengths that each discipline and its students bring, but also… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This study explores how two instructional coaches enacted modeling and co-teaching cycles with five elementary teachers during mathematics instruction. A content analysis of the coachteacher talk from 11 planning meetings and 23 lessons reveals that the coaches and teachers seldom engaged in mathematical conversations. Instead, they primarily had low-depth discussions about curriculum, other instructional materials, and assessment. Implications for school districts with instructional coaching models are discussed. tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT The proliferation of vast quantities of available datasets that are large and complex in nature has challenged universities to keep up with the demand for graduates trained in both the statistical and the computational set of skills required to effectively plan, acquire, manage, analyze, and communicate the findings of such data. To keep up with this demand, attracting students early on to data science as well as providing them a solid foray into the field becomes increasingly important. We present a case study of an introductory undergraduate course in data science that is designed to address these needs. Offered at Duke University, this course has no prerequisites and serves a wide audience of aspiring statistics and data science… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In this study, the effect of mathematics teacher candidates’ locus of control on math anxiety was tested, along with the effects of gender, achievement and class level moderators. The study was carried out according to a causal design in which locus of control was taken as an independent variable, while math anxiety was taken as the dependent variable, and gender, achievement and class levels were considered as moderator variables. The participants were 402 students from three different state universities in Turkey who were selected using a combination of convenience and purposive sampling. Data were collected from the participants using the Locus of Control Scale (LCS) and the Math Anxiety Rating Scale-Short Version (MARS-SV). A path analysis was then used to provide a combination of measurement error in… Continue Reading →
