tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract In this overview piece, we document the six student perception surveys (SPSs) currently available for state, district, and school consumption and use, given SPSs are increasingly becoming one of the more popular “multiple measures” being used to evaluate teacher qualities. We present descriptive information about each of these SPSs, including information related to cost(s), constructs or domains assessed, number of items, response option types, grade level(s) in which the SPS can be administered, etc. Given this information, we also present implications for practice, as well as calls for future research into each SPS individually and writ large, given SPSs’ increasing popularity post the passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), and also given what consumers might need… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This report summarizes findings from a national survey of 1,902 teachers of preschoolers regarding the extent to which they are able to engage in the educational practices they endorse. Teachers were given a list of 21 practices and asked to rate the extent to which each practice happened in their classroom and the extent to which they would want the practice to occur in a “perfect world.” Findings indicate few discrepancies between reported practices and beliefs. There were significant differences in the extent to which teachers from various types of programs endorsed group-centered beliefs, that is, those that encourage all children to engage in the same activities at the same time and at the same pace. Teachers in public schools, Head Start centers, and other non-profit centers… Continue Reading →

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Positive teacher attitudes are essential for success when children with special educational needs (SEN) are placed into mainstream classrooms. The present study surveyed teachers’ attitudes towards inclusion by using a large national sample and Teachers’ Attitudes towards Inclusion Scale (TAIS). A total of 1,764 Finnish basic-school teachers participated in the e-mail survey. They included 824 classroom teachers, 575 subject teachers and 365 special-education teachers. The classroom teachers scored below and the subject teachers significantly below, the neutral midpoint of the scale. The special-education teachers’ mean scores were above the midpoint. About 20% of teachers were strong opponents of inclusion, and 8% were strong advocates. The attitudes towards inclusion had only weak associations with variables other than the teacher… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In 2004, Edvantia, Inc. (formerly AEL) and the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) initiated an effort to identify successful strategies for recruiting and retaining highly qualified teachers in rural areas. They reviewed non-rural-specific and rural-specific research and practice literature, surveyed rural superintendents across the nation, and conducted case studies of three Virginia programs that support teacher recruitment and retention. Generally, the literature shows that the problem of teacher shortages varies across geography, demography, and subject area. The schools that find it hardest to recruit and retain highly qualified teachers are those in highly urban and rural areas (especially those serving minority or low-income students) and schools in the Southeast, Southwest, and the West. Especially needed are teachers in special education, bilingual education, math, and… Continue Reading →

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT In this article, we highlight the advantages of incorporating a statistical capstone experience in the undergraduate curriculum, where students perform an in-depth analysis of real-world data. Capstone experiences develop statistical thinking by allowing students to engage in a consulting-like experience that requires skills outside the scope of traditional courses: defining a complex problem, analyzing data, building a strong team, and communicating effectively. We describe the pedagogical benefits as they relate to improved student outcomes and prospective job and graduate school placement, and we classify statistical capstones into four groups: standalone capstone projects, statistical consultancies, capstone projects embedded in an advanced statistics methodology course, and instruction-focused capstone courses. This article serves as a guide for educators seeking to implement… Continue Reading →

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Online and flipped courses are becoming more commonly found across disciplines, including in (bio)-statistics. The literature contains many case studies of instructors reporting on their use of these formats. However, a gap exists in regard to a systematic study of instructors’ implementation of, attitudes on, and recommendations for online or flipped courses in (bio)statistics. We conducted a survey to elicit such responses, and we report here on n = 24 instructors who teach (bio)statistics in the health sciences. These instructors’ courses are described, as well as results summarized for their responses on various aspects of these courses, ranging from the technology they use to whether they would recommend various approaches to teaching colleagues. These findings should be useful… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This report summarizes and compares the results of a survey conducted on a pretest and posttest basis regarding teacher attitudes towards physical education. Ninety-six teachers, representing 14 schools, returned the questionnaire in the fall, and 75 of these same teachers returned the spring questionnaire. The following points summarize the main findings. (1) More teachers are making regular use of a wider variety of areas for physical education activities. (2) Over two-thirds of the respondents are satisfied with the facilities available to them. (3) More teachers are involved more frequently in personal physical activities outside the school. (4) Nearly all respondents (92%) conduct physical education activities either daily of 3 to 4 times a week. (5) More teachers are spending longer (20 or more minutes) on their physical… Continue Reading →

Abstract Increasingly students, particularly those in the social sciences, work with survey data collected through a more complex sampling method than a simple random sample. Failing to understand how to properly approach survey data can lead to inaccurate results. In this article, we describe a series of online data visualization applications and corresponding student lab activities designed to help students and teachers of statistics better understand survey design and analysis. The introductory and advanced materials presented are designed to… Continue Reading →

Abstract Sample survey design is a topic usually taught to students undertaking a minor or major in statistics in the latter part of their bachelor’s degree. This article describes an assessment project that fosters active learning and helps to develop a set of essential skills for statistical practice. The project is completed in pairs and submitted in two parts. This allows feedback from the first part to be acted upon for the second part. Ideally, students would gain experience… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Successful implementation of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSS-M) should result in noticeable differences in primary and middle school math classrooms across the United States. “Common Core Math in the K-8 Classroom: Results from a National Teacher Survey” takes a close look at how educators are implementing the Common Core math standards in classrooms across the nation. A nationally representative survey of over one thousand teachers reveals that they are increasingly familiar with the Common Core and believe that it will benefit students. Yet findings also point to several areas that warrant mid-course corrections if the standards are going fulfill more rigorous expectations. Takeaways include the following: (1) Teachers like the Common Core but they don’t think all of their students and parents are equally… Continue Reading →
