eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Teacher quality research and the study of teacher effects received renewed attention and emphasis with Sanders and Rivers’ (1996) startling finding that teacher effects are both additive and cumulative, persisting up to an estimated two years after the student has left the teacher’s classroom. Sanders and Rivers estimated that a student receiving regular assignments (even by chance) to more effective teachers resulted in differential impact on math achievement by as much as 50 percentile points. Although these findings have undergone subsequent criticism and dispute, they serve to underscore the importance of teaching quality on student learning. The purpose of this study was to examine the degree that psychosocial attitudes affect academic achievement in mathematics for students of different races during secondary schooling. Based on a quantitative methodology, data was gathered from a nationally distributed survey involving over 16,000 student participants under the auspices of the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). Transcript information was incorporated into the analysis, so student math attitudes and student racial profiles could be correlated to courses taken and grades. Significant differences were found when comparing Latina/o to non-Latina/o students with regard to student self-evaluations of mathematics affinity, appreciation and capacity. eric.ed.gov har udgivet: With teacher quality repeatedly cited as the most important “schooling” factor influencing student achievement, there has been increased interest in examining the efficacy of teacher training programs. This paper presents research examining the variation between and impact that individual teacher training institutions in Washington state have on the effectiveness of teachers they train. Using administrative data linking teachers’ initial endorsements to student achievement on state reading and math tests, we find the majority of teacher training programs produce teachers who are no more or less effective than teachers who trained out-of-state.
