Eric.ed.gov – Considerations for Realizing the Promise of Educational Gaming Technology

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Hope Elementary School recently purchased tablets for all of its students to facilitate the use of technology in the classroom. The principal at Hope Elementary understands that technology can be an efficient and effective way for teachers to access materials and differentiate instruction to support the achievement of all learners. However, some teachers are struggling to determine how to best use the tablets in the classroom. Ms. Williams is a special education teacher at Hope Elementary School. She is excited about the tablet initiative and has a number of ideas about ways she can effectively and meaningfully integrate technology into instruction. The principal at Hope Elementary has asked Ms. Williams to serve as an example for other teachers at the school to help alleviate their concerns about… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Investigating the Usage Patterns of Algebra Nation Tutoring Platform

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: We study the usage of a self-guided online tutoring platform called Algebra Nation, which is widely by middle school and high school students who take the End-of-Course Algebra I exam at the end of the school year. This article aims to study how the platform contributes to increasing students’ exam scores by examining users’ logs over a three year period. The platform under consideration was used by more than 36,000 students in the first year, to nearly 67,000 by the third year, thus enabling us to examine how usage patterns evolved and influenced students’ performance at scale. We first identify which Algebra Nation usage factors in conjunction with math overall preparation and socioeconomic factors contribute to the students’ exam performance. Subsequently, we investigate the effect of increased… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Why University Teacher Preparation Programs Should Provide a New Set of Personal Constructions of Mathematics through Math Content Courses for Elementary Teachers

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Teacher preparation programs are in danger of seriously under-preparing elementary teachers to teach mathematics for understanding if they wait to provide students with evidence of effective mathematics teaching methods in the mathematics methods courses. With strong traditional beliefs about how mathematics ought to be taught and their determination to be able to explain mathematics to elementary children, the methods course is much too late to change preservice teachers’ perceptions of mathematics or how to teach it. If we want to change the way they teach mathematics, we must do it in their mathematics content courses. In the content courses, we have a chance to provide them with positive and successful personal mathematics constructions. Only when they learn to become active problem-solvers, can they teach others the importance… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Examining the STEM Climate for Queer Students with Disabilities

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Increasing participation and success in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields continues to be a national imperative, with particular attention paid to eliminating barriers for women and underrepresented students of color. Some attention has been paid to the underrepresentation of students with disabilities in STEM fields, while few researchers have focused on the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) students in STEM. Literature about both students with disabilities and LGBTQ students suggest challenges and barriers that may prevent these groups from successfully persisting in STEM majors. This qualitative study examined the campus experiences of five queer students with disabilities in STEM fields at a predominantly white research university. Findings reveal that participants encountered male-centered, heteronormative STEM spaces, physical and social inaccessibility on campus,… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Redesigning Schools: To Reach Every Student with Excellent Teachers. Financial Planning for Secondary-Level Time-Technology Swap + Multi-Classroom Leadership

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This brief shows how middle and high school teachers in a Time-Technology Swap school model, with or without Multi-Classroom Leaders, may earn more while reaching more students, sustainably. In this model, students alternate between learning with teachers and working in a digital learning lab, where they learn online and engage in offline skill practice, homework, and project work. This frees the time of teachers to teach more students, plan, and collaborate with their peers in teaching teams. Teaching teams may also have Multi-Classroom Leaders, excellent teachers who are accountable for the outcomes of all the team’s students in a subject and for team members’ job-embedded development. Calculations are shown of when students learn online every other day in core subjects, spending a maximum average of two hours… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – From a Nation at Risk to a Nation at Hope: Recommendations from the National Commission on Social, Emotional, & Academic Development

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The promotion of social, emotional, and academic learning is not a shifting educational fad; it is the substance of education itself. It is not a distraction from the “real work” of math and English instruction; it is how instruction can succeed. And it is not another reason for political polarization. It brings together a traditionally conservative emphasis on local control and on the character of all students, and a historically progressive emphasis on the creative and challenging art of teaching and the social and emotional needs of all students, especially those who have experienced the greatest challenges. In fact, the basis of this approach is not ideological at all. It is rooted in the experience of teachers, parents, and students supported by the best educational research of… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Illinois Early Learning Project Tip Sheets: Math and Science.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The Illinois Early Learning Project (IEL) is funded by the Illinois State Board of Education to provide information resources on early learning and training related to implementing the Illinois Early Learning Standards for parents and for early childhood personnel in all settings. The IEL tip sheets offer suggestions to parents and early childhood personnel on a variety of topics related to children’s early experiences. This set of four tip sheets, in English- and Spanish-language versions, relates specifically to mathematics and science. Titles are as follows: (1)”CSI: Child Scientist Investigates!” which discusses ways to draw on preschoolers’ natural curiosity to teach them about science and scientific methods; (2) “Encouraging Scientific Thinking: Animal Study in the Classroom”; (3) “Things To Do while You’re Waiting: Math”; and (4) “Things To… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Learning from Charter School Management Organizations: Strategies for Student Behavior and Teacher Coaching

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The National Study of Charter Management Organization (CMO) Effectiveness is a four-year study designed to assess the impact of CMOs on student achievement and to identify effective structures and practices. An earlier report from this study documented the substantial variation in CMO student achievement impacts as well as variation in CMOs’ use of particular educational strategies and practices. That report noted that the most effective CMOs emphasize two practices in particular: schoolwide behavior strategies and intensive teacher coaching and monitoring. This report is designed to provide an in-depth description of the student behavior and teacher coaching practices of five high-performing CMOs that rely on these practices. Focusing on five high-performing CMOs, the report seeks to help educators learn more about these promising practices. To identify practices associated… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Common Core State Standards for Mathematics: Teacher Self-Learning Series. Module 2: Focus and Coherence–The First Two CCSSM Shifts

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This module examines Focus and Coherence, two of the three shifts required for implementation of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM). Focus and Coherence are the two major design principles of the math standards. The module assumes prior knowledge of the information presented in Module 1. Course Objectives: By the end of the module, learner will be able to: (1) state the two levels of focus and find examples of each; (2) state the two levels of coherence and find examples of each; (3) use resources to determine major work for a specific grade or course in mathematics; and (3) define “CCSSM stream” and give an example which applies to a grade level or course which is of interest to the learner. (Contains 1 footnote.)… Continue Reading
